Here are some handy things to feast upon !

Start with nmap, command-line, and the Web-Pentest-Cookbook

Start playing bandit on 'over the wire' as soon as you are relatively comfortable with the command line...using grep,ls,ls -la, file, find, ssh, nc ...etc. Dont bother reading all these cover-to-cover, just dip in for what you need or read just what currently interests you. when you're really, really, really stumped, and ive been deliberately unhelpful....cheat!
